The Situation

The existing thermal blankets and rollers at Lambton Swimming Pool, part of the City of Newcastle, were at the end of their life and the council decided to invest in a replacement system.

Because we’d managed the successful installation of thermal blankets and rollers at City of Newcastle Pools in the past, they reached out for a quote to supply and install a new system for Lambton Swimming Pool Centre.

Thermal Blankets on commercial swimming pools save thousands of dollars over their life by retaining heat, preventing water evaporation, and stopping that evaporation’s associated chemical loss.

Our Solution

Our submission was successful, and we supplied and installed Thermal Blankets and Stainless-steel Rollers with Wheel Upgrades for Lambton Swimming Pool Centre’s:

Main Pool50m x 22.86m
Diving Pool30.7m x 21.3m
Wading Pool16.7m x 9.75m
Learn to Swim Pool26.7m x 25.7m

All Thermal Blankets came complete with Wind Edging, Leading and Trailing Ends, and all accessories to store on the rollers. Plus, we also supplied and installed two Caddy Pro Portable Blanket Power Unit designed to deploy and retrieve the Thermal Blankets.

The original 50m pool had only four Thermal Blankets and Rollers. We increased this to five, making each package smaller and lighter, so they were easier for pool staff to manage.

The Learn to Swim Pool has a freeform section, so the pool required four separate Thermal Blankets. But, we designed these to be stored on just three rollers by top and tailing the smaller Thermal Blankets on one roller. Similarly, the Wading Pool required two Thermal Blankets but just one roller, as we developed another top and tailing solution.

We engaged the manufacturer to do on-site measures as the Learn to Swim Pool and the Wading Pool needed freeform shapes. These shapes were plotted using the A-B method to ensure that the Therman Blanket fit the pool perfectly. These measurements were turned into production drawings which were shared with all stakeholders before final approval.

All Thermal Blanket and Roller systems were manufactured, packaged, and transported to site by a truck complete with Hiab for easy unloading. And the delivery was coordinated with the pool’s management company, as the pool is seasonal and not open all year.

After delivery, an installation date was coordinated when the Rollers were assembled, and the Thermal Blankets were unpacked before being stored on their Rollers. The Rollers were moved pool side where they were tested on the water to confirm that they were the correct size.

Positive Outcomes

Perhaps the most positive outcome of this project is the savings made by the pool’s operators, and the reduced impact on the environment, through the use of Thermal Blankets.

But additionally, we were able to design the system with the Pool Operators in mind, keeping the Thermal Blanket and Roller packages to a practical size to make maneuvering and operation easy. Plus, adding the Caddy Pro Power unit to power the rollers during deployment and retrieval of the blankets.

We recently purchased new pool blankets and rollers for two of our sites. The support during the procurement process was excellent and IQ delivered in providing us with a high-quality product in a good turnaround time. The installation phase was well communicated and organised, and provided us with a hassle-free experience. IQ is a trusted service provider for us thanks to Pam Robinson and the ongoing reliability and customer service that is provided.
